Ah-ha! Finally I am participating in a Monthly DIY Challenge again with my bloggy buddies! It feels like forever since I have partaken in this fun event!
This month it is all about dollar store creations! How fun, right? I have to admit though, I waited until the last minute on this project and in doing so, the dollar store did not have all of the supplies needed for my project I had envisioned. Damn you Dollar Tree! Or wait, I guess I should be cursing myself as I am the slacker around here that waited until the very last minute to get my supplies needed for a project that has been planned for months… So with all that said, let’s just say that my dollar store creation went a little beyond just your typical dollar store items and budget. O-well lesson learned, I need to get crack’n on this stuff earlier!!!
Now on with the project in hand! I decided to create a faux succulent garden using dollar store frames as the shadow box. Adding a little twist into the mix by incorporating a votive candle! Here is how my little succulent garden all came together!
DIY Faux Succulent Garden
Supplies:
- 3 5×7 dollar store frames
- moss
- faux succuletns
- faux twigs
- paint
- dark wax (optional)
- paint brush
It all started with these three dollar store frames.
I painted the frames using Americana Decor Chalky Paint in color primitive with two coats.
Once that was dry I applied some dark wax in certain areas with at lint free cloth to give it a rustic look.
Then I glued the sides of the frames together in the shape of a triangle and let it completely dry. I applied some duct tape to help hold it tightly together while it was drying.
Of course after gluing it all together I noticed that I forgot to paint the inside…DOH! So back to painting it was. Then while waiting for that to dry, I traced around the bottom of the frame shadow box on to some white foam board that I purchased at the dollar store. Then it cut it out with an x-acto knife.
After cutting the triangle shape out, I had an ah-ha moment! I thought why not add even more spunk to this succulent garden with a flame-less votive candle inside. So I simply cut a circle in the middle of the foam board that I had just cut for the bottom/base of my succulent garden. Making it super easy and convenient to turn the votive on and off.
to make sure it stayed secure I glued it to the bottom. This foam board was an easy and cheap way to close the bottom part of the frames keeping the moss and succulents inside.
Then I added the moss, succulents and a few little branches inside and my faux succulent garden was complete! I have to say for putting this all together at the last minute, I am pretty happy with how this all turned out!
