Hey Hey, Happy Hump Day everyone! Hope everyone has had a great week and hopefully enjoying some warmer weather! The sun sure is shining here in SLC and I’m lovin’ it!
It is the second Wednesday of the month, so you know what that means Monthly DIY Challenge time!!! This month we have partnered up with Modern Masters to bring you 12 ways to use patina paint from their Metal Effects collection. My husband and I have been working hard on my sons bedroom (which is finally done and can’t wait to share all the nitty-gritty details with you…eek!!!) all that was left for the room was just a few accent pieces to help bring the room together. With my sons bedroom being more on the rustic side, choosing the iron paint with the rust activator was the perfect choice to create a rusty look to a metal letter.
Here’s how my project came together and how you can to create a rusty look on metal.
How to Create A Rusty Finished Look On Metal
Supplies:
- Modern Masters Metal Effects Kit (contents in the package come with everything you need)
I found this metal B at my local craft store to use in my son Beckham’s room, but I wanted to give it a more rustic feel to fit in with his retro/rustic room.
Step 1
Clean off surface and paint 2 coats of primer, Letting each coat dry 1/2 an hour before applying the next coat. Once you have applied two coats let dry for at least 12 hours. I just let mine dry overnight.
Step 2
After letting the primer dry for 12 hours or overnight then paint a thin layer of the oxidizing iron paint that was in the kit. You will need at least 2 coats of this or more depending on the project. Mine took 3 coats.
Step 3
Now time to give the metal a rusty finish. Using the rust activator, lightly spray the metal letter. It will take about 3 hours before you start seeing the results. Keep applying the rust activator until you have reached your desired rusty effect.
Pretty happy with how my project turned out and it fits perfectly in my sons new room!
Can’t wait to share the rest of the project that we have completed for my sons room as well as the big reveal!!!
Now let’s take a look at the other projects for this months challenge!

Letter looks great and I am pumped to see your son’s new room!
I love how there are so many cool color variations that came out of the rusting process! This piece looks so old and weathered – like a cool antique. Great job!
Your finish turned out so neat with all the different colors! I bet it looks great in your son’s room.
