Okay, here is a unique place to add to your list of places to check out! If you like camping and cool places, I promise this pit house won’t let you down. An added bonus, your kids will think you are pretty dang cool too, maybe even asking you to build them a pit house of their own in the backyard like my boys did ha ha!
The Pit House is located at Fremont Indian State Park inside the Sam Stowe Campground. Tucked away in a secluded spot surrounded by rocky mountains. You truly feel like you have the whole campground to yourself.
The pit house is a modernized version of the pit houses that the Fremont Indians once called home. When I say modernized, I mean mattresses, electricity, and an electric heater to keep you toasty warm at night during those cooler months. Yet it still has an authentic feel with the concrete floors, exposed wood and skylight that opens up. Now lets go show you around the pit house, shall we?!

Equipped with an picnic table, pergola and a fire pit, the pit house is ready for you to enjoy your meals, smore’s and stories by the fire!

Sam Stowe Pit House Amenities:
- 5 beds (4 twin beds and 1 full) accommodating 6 people
- electric heater
- picnic table and chairs (indoor use only)
- electricity and outlets
- trash bucket and cleaning tools/supplies
Note: While there are beds, there are no linens or pillows provided. There are restrooms at the campground which are conveniently located just a short walk from the pit house.
The inside was surprisingly spacious with enough room around the beds to place the table and chairs that are provided in the middle to play games on at night. We went in October when it was a little chilly, so it was the perfect setup to stay inside and still remain warm.
I would like to call the pit house set up more like “glamping” With electricity and the electric heater.
As you can see from the picture above, the full size bed is located right in the middle. with two twin beds on each side, one right below the top that pulls out. A nice touch is the skylight above that lets in natural light as well as opens up for some fresh air to come in. This place is so cool!
Where is the Pit House located?
Only 2 hours and 44 minute drive from Salt Lake City, it is located at Fremont Indian State Park in a secluded spot at the Sam Stowe Campground in Sevier, Utah. Great location that is close to the museum, has epic views, trails and more!
Sam Stowe Campground also has 7 single-family campsites (full hookups), 1 group campsite, 2 cabins. The group site has three individual parking areas for trailers/RVs, with a separate area for group tents and tables.

Sam Stowe Campground is dog friendly but please note that dogs unfortunately are not allowed to stay in the pit house.
How do I Book?
To book, simply go here to the Fremont Indian State Parks website and click on the red button that says reserve. From there you can filter your options by campground as camp sites. It is $65 plus tax per night. You can also reserve the pit house at Reserve America.
My family and I really enjoy staying in different and unique places like this. It was the perfect place for an overnight getaway filled with adventure! Until next time!
