Wow. What a great time we had last week in Sunny San Diego. So many firsts on this trip, including this being our first time traveling with child…eek!!! But when all was said and done, my son Beckham’s first time on a plane, seeing the ocean and having his feet in the sand was amazing! We all had so much fun and our little guy was, mercifully, a trooper the entire time.
Naturally the thought of Beckham flying for the first time filled me with trepidation. Traveling is already tiring and hard without kids, so I could only imagine what it was going to be like with my little “Curious George”. The main fear however being how he would handle the, thankfully, brief flight. Brainstorming ways to keep him occupied on the plane led me off to the dollar store for some cheap new toys. Thinking that when he got restless I could present him a glorious, never seen before, new toy to keep him occupied. For a minute anyway. We also made sure we had plenty of snacks on hand. Much to our surprise there was really nothing to worry about. Airport security was a breeze and, well, see for yourself how Beckham did on the plane 🙂
He slept pretty much the whole way…Yipee!
Once we landed in San Diego we hit the shuttle to take us to our rental car company, picked up our rental car from Firefly Rental Car and headed off to our Resort!
This lush hideaway sits directly on San Diego’s Mission Bay, with the beautiful Pacific Ocean at it’s back. It almost has a Hawaiian or Caribbean feel to it, very tranquil and inviting. There are two restaurants onsite. The Atoll restaurant is more fine dining which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a lighter fare and more casual, there is Moray’s Lounge. Each room appeared to have there own balcony or patio. There is a pool, hot tub and other amenities including a Spa.
The luscious and tropical theme is Immediately noticed when you walk into the lobby. Rather than your standard contemporary hotel layout, there is a beautiful waterfall, and fish pond complete with large koi and other various fish. This was a very nice touch as it was welcoming, relaxing and made us feel like we were officially on vacation!
The grounds at the hotel also were very well kept and tropical as well. Quaint little walk ways with brick outlines meander through the grounds, with vibrant tiki signs to direct your travels. Additionally there were many various ponds with fish and ducks all around the resort. Various flora and fauna littered the resort with trees and plants from different tropical regions. To top it off there was an area with 5 or 6 exotic birds that you can check out. My little guy loved that.
The pool was a perfect size with plenty of chairs and even these canopy lounge chairs that are great if you are looking for more shade. The pool has a bar where you can order drinks and food. Right off to the pool is an arcade. Great for the kids or husbands haha! We never went in because I was worried I wouldn’t get my husband out lol! Or it was because we were just to busy enjoying everything that San Diego has to offer and everything to do at the resort!
The pool is so refreshing even the ducks like to take a swim!
Now to our fabulous room. When we had originally booked our room, we booked just a standard room. The more we thought about it, we knew that it was going to be more convenient for us to a room with a kitchenette. Travelling with a growing boy that is always eating, we knew we needed a room with all those amenities or else we would be spending so much money eating out all the time. I emailed the resort to request a room upgrade if it was available. The staff was great and emailed me right away letting me know that they were able to accommodate us to a studio room that is equipped with a kitchen.
Our room was located on the 12th floor in the Tower. When we walked into our room we were in AWWW! The room exceeded our expectations on pretty much every level, and most importantly our view was AMAZING!!!! We also had a huge balcony that overlooked that calm Mission Bay AND a great view of the ocean. Needless to say it was perfect.
Aren’t those views amazing?! Catamaran Resort & Spa sits on Mission Bay and right across the street rests the Pacific Beach. We had a view of both, it was awesome!
Our room had two double beds, couch, table with two chairs, iHome for iPod, TV, full kitchen with cooking equipment, microwave and coffeemaker. It was perfect for us, and had everything that we needed. The room size was also fine. When I booked the hotel through Expedia, you can put notes for the hotel. I had requested a crib for my baby. I really thought I was going to have to call down to the hotel staff to request it again, thinking that maybe they wouldn’t see that note. To my present surprise I did not have to do that. The resort was on top of it and had a crib all set up for us upon arrival! It was great! They really had already exceeded my expectations and we had just arrived!
Here are pics of our room.
Upon checking in we received two complimentary tickets to the Bahia Belle. The Bahia Belle is a“Turn of the Century” Mississippi-style stern wheeler that offers boat cruises on the waters of Mission Bay. Aboard the cruise, the Bahia Belle features live music, cocktails and dancing while enjoying beautiful views of Mission Bay. We were so excited to go and planned on going Saturday night, didn’t make that, so tried for Sunday and that didn’t happen and so on. It was an ongoing joke about that because we always missed it. We were so bummed that we were never able to go. We had every intention but we would do so much during the day that when we would get back to the resort we were all exhausted. Next time for sure. To read more about the Bahia Belle and it’s schedule click here.
Here are some pics of the Bahia Belle from our room, instead of ever going on it we would just watch it come in and out of the dock and wish we were on it.
We really enjoyed our Stay at the Catamaran Resort and Spa. When we go back to San Diego we will definitely be staying here again. It is in the absolute perfect location, as everything we went to visit was only about a 10-15 min drive. It was also really nice to be right on Mission Bay that was more quite and less crowded, and then you have Pacific Beach right across the street if you were looking for more action. This resort is very kid friendly and has a lot to offer for everyone. I would definitely recommended this hotel. I will be posting more about the resort in my trip report so stay tuned!
Since we had been traveling all day we didn’t do much when we got to the resort. After we settled into our room first thing was first. Take Beckham to see the beach and the ocean! Well technically not the ocean since we were just at the resort so we took him to see the bay! He loved it! It was a little overcast and chilly our first day so he wasn’t really in swim attire, but that didn’t stop his adventurous spirit. To our mild surprise he wanted to get right in and was soon literally pulling me in. Looks like our decision to give him swimming lessons early at 6 months had paid off, as he is definitely a water boy. It was really a profound moment to see the blend of curiosity, excitement, wonder, and unadulterated joy on his handsome little face as he braved the waters. Here he is playing in the sand and the bay for the first time!
After a little fun getting our toes wet, we headed down to Moray’s Lounge, located in the resort. They have happy hour I believe from 3pm-6pm every day. During happy hour they have drinks and food for half off. The food, and atmosphere, were great. The inviting couch seating with cozy fire pits and lit tiki torches made for a very relaxed good vibration type feel. It has seating outside overlooking the bay and also to our delight, was very kid-friendly as well. My husband and I both ordered the fish tacos and they were very flavorful and fresh!
After we had dinner we pretty much called it a night and headed up to the room and enjoyed the views from our room balcony!
Here is carousal with additional pictures for your enjoyment.
Stay tuned for day 2 coming soon. Here is a sneak peak at our adventures that day! Can you guess where we spent the day?
